Cover Letter

I am writing to you to express my interest in the GIS related internship at your company. At the moment, I am a senior at the University of Mary Washington where I am majoring in Journalism and completing a certificate in Geographic Information Systems.

Throughout high school, I was always drawn to English, whether it was reading books or writing stories. Though when I arrived at Mary Washington, I realized I wanted something more than just an English major. I wanted a Journalism major; however, the university did not offer a major in that field, so I had to create my own. Through the process of researching which classes to take, I came across one of the beginning classes of GIS. Intrigued by its description, I added the class, and sooner or later I became hooked. It was strange to find myself become so interested in a field of work that required such intensive computer skills since I usually shied away from computers. But the more I learned, the more I was fascinated by the structure and functions that GIS had to offer.

The GIS courses I have taken during college so far have taught me how to analyze and visually represent data. After awhile, I realized that computers weren’t as scary as I originally thought; they were useful and great tool of communication. Now, I’m excited to extend my experience and knowledge in the GIS field because not only do I comprehend it better, but I can make a difference by explaining environmental problems that are causing harm in communities (and vice versa) through a virtual design. I think that’s the reason why I find it so fascinating because I know I can make a difference.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions about my experiences or interests, or how I can help your company’s needs. Have a nice day.
